about

As the printer ink stains on my childhood room rug show, I was taking apart electronics long before I had any clue how they worked. Fast-forward ten years, and I'm working my way through a Computer & Embedded Systems degree, with dozens of projects under my belt. After having gained some experience in both industry and academia, I can tell that this is exactly the field I want to work in.

Some say that politicians, personalities, and the wealthy have all the power. That isn't how I see it. From trains to telegraphs and now transistors, throughout history the most impactful changes - the paradigm shifts - were always sparked by technological advances. I want to work where the real changes are made.

I love to learn. I am never more comfortable than when tackling a new problem in the safety of my homemade electronics lab. Equally, I love to teach. My favorite part about teaching electronics is that as people begin to learn more about them, they slowly realize how unfathomably impressive and - for lack of a better word - just plain cool the field really is.

My ultimate goal is to become a professional embedded systems engineer, creating innovative technologies that future generations can inherit, laugh at, and improve upon, one project at a time.

experience

  • Embedded Systems Engineer / Float IoT

    2021 to Present
    • Initially tasked with testing pre-release versions of the company's IoT hardware and software, I gained valuable experience in identifying and debugging embedded device issues.
    • Currently, I serve as the product owner for the development of an automated device testing and verification system.
  • EMMPOL 15 Analog Astronaut Mission / Astronaut Center

    March 2023
    • As a member of a five-student crew, I participated in a ten-day mission in a remote habitat situated near Krakow, Poland. This immersive experience allowed us to simulate space exploration conditions, testing our adaptability and problem-solving skills in a controlled environment.
    • As the technical officer, I performed equipment maintenance and conducted ophthalmological assessments on crew members. Additionally, I developed a wearable eye tracking device to precisely measure blink rates, offering insights into stress, irritation, and cognitive focus.
  • Research Assistant / University Utrecht

    2021 to 2022
    • Developed software for the FAIR Battery project to establish standardized and comparable testing methods for experimental redox-flow batteries with diverse configurations and chemistries.
    • Consulted on the development of a Battery Management System (BMS) tailored to this innovative battery technology.
    • Created and maintained various forms of online documentation for this project including GitHub, Read The Docs, and Just One Giant Lab (JOGL).
  • Research Internship / Cognision

    July 2019
    • Cognision is a medical electronics company specializing in standardized ERP/QEEG tests. Utilizing advanced AI algorithms on the collected brainwave signatures, enabling quantitative assessment of brain function and diagnosis of conditions such as concussion and dementia.
    • During my internship at Cognision, I gained invaluable insights into the techniques used in cutting edge medical electronics, as well as the engineering required to maintain leadership in this field.
  • The Smart Make / Co-Founder

    2019 TO 2021
    • The mission of our company was to provide introductory robotics classes to highschool students in the Netherlands in a fun and engaging way, promoting their interest in and understanding of electronics at a young age.
    • Thomas Evers and I co-founded this company during our final year of highschool. We both proceeded to take a gap year to give the company our best shot.

PROJECTS

  • An Integrated System for Live Characterization and Adaptive Compensation of Ultrasonic Transducers / BSc Thesis

    2023 TO 2024
    • Researched methods to overcome limitations in ultrasonic transducers, vital for medical imaging and industrial applications. Developed an integrated solution for consistent frequency response despite external disturbances, addressing challenges in passive compensation methods.
    • Implications extend to medical imaging, material testing, and industrial processes, advancing ultrasonic technology across industries.
  • BitFlip Payload / Da Vinci Sattelite Student Team, Delft University of Technology

    2022 TO PRESENT
    • Collaborated with a multidisciplinary team of engineering students to build a satellite payload that will be launched aboard a custom cubesat in 2024.
    • Redesigned the PCB and wrote software for the BitFlip payload: an instrument used to measure the effects of radiation on electronic memory in space.
  • Open Turret / Personal Project

    2021 TO PRESENT
    • Started a project to make an open source pan tilt mechanism that could be used for a variety of applications.
    • Designed the first versions of the mechanical and electrical systems, producing initial prototypes that got the project up and running.
    • As the project grew, I learned quite a bit about application interface design using the Qt5 package from Computer Scientists who joined the project.
  • Delft Open Hardware / Student Team, Delft University of Technology

    2020 to Present
    • Joined the Open Hardware Club where the latest open source hardware is discussed and developed. I quickly made many inspiring friends, and assisted in the organisation of workshops.
    • In charge of the software development for an educational workshop badge. The device was an internet connected color sensor that could upload its recorded data to a website that displayed all connected nodes, designed to demonstrate the simplicity and capabilities of IoT devices.
  • MicroFTDI / Personal Project

    April 2021
    • This is my take on a tiny modern USB to UART converter.
    • The FTDI converter is an essential tool for any embedded developer, and I did not like the available options, so I made my own USB-C one. Now I make sure to always have a handful of them scattered around my backpack.
    • This was a good exercise in trying to fit a device into the smallest possible form factor without compromising performance, something that I like to do with projects as much as possible.

Education

MSc Computer & Embedded Systems Engineering / Delft University of Technology

2024 - Present

I decided to do a master's degree, with the hope of supplementing my practical experience with deeper theoretical knowledge.

Semester Abroad / École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne

Fall 2022

At EPFL, I had the privilege of selecting courses based on my interests for a semester. This provided me with the opportunity to explore a diverse range of advanced topics and hands-on projects. As a result, I gained a deeper understanding of my preferred specialty within Electrical Engineering. I took courses covering Embedded Systems, Computer Architecture, Medical Electronics, and Nanoelectronics.

BSc Electrical Engineering / Delft University of Technology

2020 - 2024

This university provided me with the perfect platform to acquire a strong formal foundation in electronics, software, and computer engineering. In particular, the teaching style of frequent examination and practical projects each semester was well suited to my style of learning.
